about souls of samhain

The Souls of Samhain

Every year on 31 October, the people of ancient Ireland celebrated Samhain — the time when summer ended and winter began. They believed that on this special night, the world of the living and the world of the spirits came a little closer together.

Why the Souls Returned

Irish families believed that the souls of loved ones could visit home during Samhain. They returned to:

  • Check on their families

  • Enjoy the warmth of the hearth

  • Share in the holiday feast prepared in their honor

These visits were seen as caring, peaceful, and full of love.

How People Welcomed Them

Families lit candles and small fires to guide friendly spirits back. A little extra food might be placed on the table or near the door as a kind gesture for any visiting soul.

Because not all spirits were familiar, people sometimes wore simple costumes to blend in — a tradition that eventually became our modern Halloween dressing-up.

The Heart of Samhain

Samhain reminded everyone that even though loved ones passed on, they were still remembered. It was a night for warmth, family, stories, and honoring those who came before.

Mission

Our mission is to celebrate Samhain in a family-friendly way: to preserve Irish stories, offer simple rituals and crafts, and help households honour ancestors with warmth, respect, and joy.

Vision

Our vision is to keep the heart of Samhain alive — a world where families celebrate Irish tradition with warmth, remembrance, and joyful connection.
